About

Writing the value

  • mixed: kana and kanji stand upright, while Latin letters and digits are turned 90 degrees to the right. This is the initial value.
  • upright: Latin letters and digits stand upright too, stacked one per row.
  • sideways: every character, kana and kanji included, is turned 90 degrees to the right.

Only in vertical text

It only has an effect when writing-mode is vertical-rl or vertical-lr. The preview on this page sets writing-mode: vertical-rl first for that reason.

Numbers: consider tate-chu-yoko

For short numbers such as the "10" in a date, text-combine-upright: all (tate-chu-yoko) fits the digits side by side into one character space, which usually reads better than stacking them with upright.
