About

Writing the value

Use normal (nothing added) or a length such as 0.5em or 4px. em is relative to the element's own font size. The initial value is normal.

Compared with letter-spacing

letter-spacing adds space after every character, while word-spacing adds it only at space characters. In English, only the gaps between words widen; the spacing inside each word stays the same.

Little effect on Japanese

Japanese text has no spaces between words, so word-spacing barely changes it. It does not apply to the ideographic (full-width) space either. Use letter-spacing to change the spacing of Japanese text.
